Does running seem like something other people do but just isn't something for you? Maybe, if you're reading this, your at least a little bit curious and asking if this is the right hobby for you. I'm here tell you why it is!

How And Why I Started

For the longest time, I thought running just wasn’t for me. I stuck to the gym instead, but eventually I got bored and wanted something new. I truly didn't enjoy my first attempt at running and went about it all wrong. I was wearing the wrong shoes and I instantly felt how unfit I actually was and freaked out about how high my heart rate got. I was sure that I had proven myself right - I am not a runner.

Not long after, a few people in my life also got into running and all of a sudden it all became more of a social thing and a reason to catch up and hang out while feeling like we were doing something good for us. Now it's been a few years and I can absolutely say I am built for running and dare I say, I even enjoy it!

I've also really enjoyed being outside more and running has become a mental reset for me, even a short jog clears my head and leaves me feeling lighter and more focused. Running has also made me more resilient. Running isn't easy, especially when you’re starting out, but learning to push past that inner voice telling me to quit has made me stronger, both physically and mentally. It might sounds corny but i've proven to myself that I canĀ do hard things and I feel so much better for it!

So, Should You Try Running This Weekend?

Let break down the pros and cons to taking up running as a hobby:

Pros

  • Low barrier to entry, just get out there!

  • You don't need a membership, going outside is free.

  • Your fitness improves.

  • You get to go outside more.

  • It's good for your mental health.

  • You can run alone or with other people.

  • The running community is very welcoming and friendly.

  • Not too time consuming, a good run can take under 30 mins.

Cons

  • Good shoes can be expensive.

  • Starting is the hardest part.

  • Can take awhile to get used to more exercise.

  • Risk of injury - beware blisters and chafing!

If you're looking to get both physically and mentally fit, give running a try! Start slow and keep the milage short until you're ready to step it up a notch. Try a walk-run combo and build up your endurance over time, being out there and giving it a go is the main achievement!
